Two Police Officers Detained as Probe Continues into Death of Brazilian Miner

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Two police officers are assisting the investigations into the death of a 37-year-old Brazilian miner, who was shot over the weekend.

The police said that Evastevo Marques Costa was killed in the Puruni District, Cuyuni/Mazaruni on Saturday.

Media reports said that the man had been shot after he ran away from the police who were checking on the documentations of the miner.

Police said the two officers had travelled along the Puruni River, when on arrival at the Landing on Saturday, one of the officers left the boat and proceeded to a shop two loud explosions were heard shortly afterwards.

The police said that one of the officers claimed his colleague told him that he had returned fire after he was shot upon by the Brazilian national.
Police said investigations are continuing. – CMC
