GEORGETOWN, Guyana – A senior police officer was killed, and four others injured, when their patrol vehicle flipped over twice after one of the tyres blew off on Tuesday night.
Police said that Inspector Ian Welch died at a hospital in the Central Rupununi region, south of here, following the accident and that four other police officers, including the driver, were injured.
The police said that the driver lost control of the vehicle after the tyre blew out and that the 38-year-old Inspector, who was the most senior officer in the patrol, was seated in the front of the vehicle.
The accident came a few hours after the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement that there had been a 20 per cent decline in fatal accidents here. – CMC
