PROFILE OF THE WEEK
By Dr. Dhanpaul Narine
Sandhya Sugrim won a bunch of awards at a recent event in Brooklyn. It was a fitting recognition for her years of hard work and dedication to her profession and her community. It was also a testimony to her discipline, as she had to overcome many challenges on her road to success. Today, she stands on the crest of a new wave as she sets about carving her path.
Sandhya was born in New Jersey and she is the youngest of four children. Her mom is Siekel from Surinam and her dad is Suresh Sugrim from Guyana. Sandhya attended Carteret Elementary School in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her early education was interrupted by a visit to Holland. She attended school there before returning to New Jersey.
Sandhya loved Math. It is her best subject; she was always good at numbers. She went to Bloomfield Middle School and was on the honor roll that earned her the Bengal Pride award. After leaving Bloomfield, Sandhya went to vocational school in Essex County to study web design. She credits teachers Ms. Smith and Mr. Rojas for their support.
While she was in High School Sandhya had the opportunity to visit Europe. In 2013, she went to London and Paris. She enjoyed her visit and learned a lot. In that same year, Sandhya graduated from High School and enrolled at St. John’s University. Her next stop was John Jay College where her degree was in Computer Science.
The course was challenging and involved a great amount of sacrifice but Sandhya put in the time and effort and it paid off in the end. She did well and graduated in 2017 with a degree in Computer Science and Information Security. Sandhya was able to build on her all round character through work experience. She was employed by a computer firm in her sophomore year, in Flushing, and later worked at a staffing agency. Her boss Lisa Germano was particularly kind to her and Sandhya was able to adjust her schedules to attend classes.
The completion of her degree meant that it was time to formally enter the world of work. Sandhya was offered a job in the field of her studies. The department was impressed with her deportment as an intern and offered her a job upon graduation.
Sandhya takes her job seriously and will spare no steps to improve herself to reach the pinnacle of her career. What is remarkable is that she takes nothing for granted. She knows the importance of hard work and is willing to put in the hours to do a great job. Sandhya views the future with promise. She wants to be a better person that will continue to make a contribution. She can be seen in the temples on a regular basis making a contribution, either by singing, or by speaking to the others, to encourage them to do what is right.
Sandhya has many strengths and one of them is to be independent. When she was studying in New York she practically raised herself and was responsible for making key decisions about her future. She is effusive about the role her dad Suresh has played in her life. Pandit Suresh Sugrim is known as a humanitarian and philanthropist. He spends a considerable amount of time doing voluntary work in Guyana, to raise consciousness and levels of living in various communities there.
One of the positives is that Sandhya has had the opportunity to be with her dad and to help in these projects. Her first visit to Guyana was made in 2005. Her dad was involved in the building of an orphanage in Berbice. The project grew and it led to frequent visits by Sandhya to Guyana.
It made her realize that she was lucky; she was presented with many opportunities but she must not take them for granted. She would like use her position to help others. Her visits to Guyana have given her a deep appreciation of the country and she intends to continue helping the mission of her father.
How does she feel about the work of her dad in Guyana? Sandhya says, ‘I am happy. My dad is making a positive difference, whether he is building homeless shelters or an orphanage. The good news is that he is continuing to serve. I appreciate the fact that I should be there to help him as well.’
Sandhya thanks her dad Suresh and her mom Siekel for their support. She is also grateful to Prabha Gossai for her love and encouragement. Then there is Christopher Dipchand and his parents, Hema and Vijay, who have welcomed Sandhya with open arms. Christopher describes Sandhya as an amazing person.
There is no doubt that Sandhya Sugrim is a young lady that is well grounded in her religion and culture; she is beautiful with brains to match! Sandhya will go far in her career, will inspire others, and will continue to make us proud. We wish her and her family all the best in the future.
Sandhya is the proud recipient of awards for achievement, from the Guyana TriState Alliance.
