Pleaded Not Guilty to Trafficking in Cocaine and Remanded to Prison

GUYANA (NEWS SOURCE) — Two days after being busted at the Cheddi Jagan Airport, a teenager and her mother appeared in Court and were charged and remanded for cocaine trafficking.

Rachel Narine, 19, and her mother, Kavita Persaud, both appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and were charged for the trafficking of close to six pounds of cocaine through the airport.

The two women appeared nervous during their brief Court appearance, as the Court heard that they both live in Ramsingh Street, Annandale on the East Coast of Demerara.
Both women denied the cocaine trafficking allegation and entered a plea of not guilty.

The Court was told by Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford that on Valentine’s day, Narine was an outgoing passenger at the airport when she was searched as she made her way to the departure lounge.

The over six pounds of the illegal substance was found in packets between two sets of material in her handbag.

The woman was immediately arrested and as the investigation progressed, her mother and a taxi driver were also held.

The Court heard that while in custody, both women gave confession statements to CANU Officers with detailed information on the drugs and how it go into the bag.

The women were remanded to jail until their next Court hearing later this month. – (newssourcegy.com)
