KINGSTON, Jamaica (Sept. 9, 2017) – A lightning strike on Friday led to the closure of the Norman Manley International Airport.
In a statement MIA Airports Limited, the operators of the NMIA, based on an advisory from the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA), a lightning strike impacted the radar system and this resulted in the suspension of flights.
The radar and communications systems of the JCAA, is located at it’s Corporate Area office.
Early Saturday the airport remained closed with the JCAA stating that it is working to fix its radar and communications system.
It says air operators and other stakeholders have been advised.
However flights to an from the Sangster International Airport in the western capital of Montego Bay have not been affected. – CMC
