GUYANA — National swimmer, Earlando McRae, has found himself in hot water after being busted at New York’s JFK Airport with a little over five pounds of cocaine, News Source Guyana has reported.
According to Federal Court documents, the 28-year-old arrived in New York on Sunday, November 4th, on a flight from Guyana. He presented a suitcase to Border Patrol agents and during a search of the suitcase, the agents realised that the sides were fake.
Further examination of the sides revealed packets of the white powdery substance which turned out to be cocaine.
McRae was immediately arrested and taken into custody. He appeared in Court on this past Monday and was remanded to New York detention centre until the 20th November, when the case will come up again, News Source reported.
The young swimming star is well known in the local swimming arena and has represented Guyana at a number of regional and international swim meets, according to the online news service.
He had taken a break from competitive swimming, but returned to the pool earlier this year to get back into competition.
Guyana’s Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has been informed of the bust and has launched a local probe, News Source said.
