GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Oct 26, CMC – Police were probing the death of an 86-year-old shopkeeper, whose body was found with her hands and feet tied in her bedroom.
Police believe that Bibi Ramjit of West Bank Demerara was killed between late on Sunday.
They said Monday that a 59-year-old farmer had gone to the grocery store to buy eddoes from the deceased and told lawmen that she did not have change for his GUY$5,000 note. He said he had made a promise to return later and pay her.
Two hours later, the man returned to the shop and police said he noticed the shop door and the backdoor to the upstairs flat was open.
“He called out several times for the deceased but got no response. As a result, he proceeded to the upper flat of the house where he looked into a bedroom and saw the deceased lying motionless on her back on her bed with her feet and hands tied,” the police said in a statement.
The farmer reportedly immediately raised an alarm and the police said they checked the body for any marks of violence, finding none.
They said an autopsy will be done later and that no one has been arrested as a result of the murder.
