Granger Promises Cash Grants From Oil Money for Families With School-aged Children

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Families with school aged children have been promised cash grants, once money from the oil industry starts pouring into the country’s coffers.

This was announced on Wednesday by President David Granger as he spoke during a rally in Essequibo, to the south of here.

According to Granger, the coalition government does not want to put oil money in the pockets of the rich, but into the homes of ordinary Guyanese.

“We will put oil money in your homes and households…we will ensure that every family with a child, in school, gets a cash grant…the money will come to you,” Granger said.

The President said his cabinet has deliberated on the issue and arrived at that position. He said that this will form part of his decade of development which will also focus on several areas of development for the country.

Guyana stands to benefit from billions of dollars in earnings from the oil sector.

Oil production started just one month ago and the country’s economy is set to grow by more than 80 percent this year. – CMC
