PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Former President of the Senate, Dr. Linda Baboolal – the first woman to hold this position, died on Thursday at the age of 78.
Baboolal, who was a medical doctor, served as president of the Upper House between 2002 and 2007.
In a statement , the ruling People’s National Movement said Baboolal had the distinction of the first, and to date, the only female Chairman of the party and one who, during her tenure, “won repute for her compassion, charm and unswerving moral probity”.
She was also the first woman to act as the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
“The People’s National Movement joins the nation in prayer for the repose of her soul and we lift her family, her husband Dr. Michael Baboolal and their children and grand children in our thoughts and with love. We are grateful to them for sharing their wife, mother, and grandmother with us and with the wider national community for almost 30 years,” the party said. – CMC
