Escaped Prisoner Royden Williams Recaptured

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (Oct 10, 2017) – Guyana police have recaptured convicted murderer, Mark Royden Williams, who escaped custody three months ago when prisoners set afire to the main prison in the capital.

Police said that Williams, who had been convicted earlier this year, for the murder of eight people and the manslaughter of four others during the 2008 Bartica Massacre, was recaptured on Monday night in the Berbice area.

A police statement said Williams, who was alone and unarmed at the time of his recapture, was found in a passenger mini-bus along the Weldaad Public Road on the West Coast of Berbice.

The statement said the recapture was as a result of an intelligence led operation and that when he was found, he dressed in a Burgundy tee-shirt and a blue pants and no longer carried a dreadlock hairstyle.

Williams was last spotted over a month ago in Linden, when he managed to escape a joint services operation at Amelia’s Ward. His fellow prison escapee, Uree Varswyck was shot dead during that operation.

In July, Williams, along with three other prisoners, hot his way out of the Camp Street prison during a fire, leaving one prison officer dead and several others injured.

Police said that only two prisoners remain on the run. – CMC
