Brother of Popular Chutney Singer Fatally Struck by Vehicle Driven by GDF Coast Guard Officer

GUYANA — The police say they are investigating a fatal accident involving a 28-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) coast guard officer.

The accident occurred around 10:20pm on Sunday along the De Willem Public Road, West Coast Demerara, and resulted in the death of Roopchand Ramkellawan, 35, of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo. He was the brother of popular Chutney singer Mahendra Ramkellawan.

The driver, who has been identified as 28-year-old Eson Trim, a GDF Coast Guard officer of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was detained by police.

The police said in a statement on Monday that investigations revealed that the victim was crossing the road when he was struck by the car. Ramkellawan was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead on arrival. An unlicensed pistol with four live rounds was found on his person, according to the Police.

Meanwhile, the GDF, in a brief statement issued Tuesday, also confirmed that Trim is currently assisting the police with their investigations.

“The Chief of Staff, officers and ranks of the GDF, regret this unfortunate incident and extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” the statement said.
