PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The police have stepped up their presence in a section of the capital following protest action taken by residents who have accused them of killing a man on Sunday.
The police report that officers from the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) went to the home of Akile “Christmas” James early Monday , when they were reportedly greeting by gunfire.
The IATF officers reportedly returned fire, killing James.
However, according to residents, there was no confrontation as suggested by the police, and James was murdered while still in bed.
Initial reports indicate that the police visited his home as they probe the recent murder of a police officer.
The Port of Spain City Corporation has since launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the police have sought to assure that public that they are maintaining their presence and they have also cleared roads that were blocked in the capital. – CMC
