TRINIDAD & TOBAGO — An eight-year-old girl drowned over the weekend in a makeshift pool at her home at Morne Coco Road, Petit Valley.
The incident occurred at about 1.30 pm on Saturday.
Police were reported by the Trinidad Guardian as saying Tenille Giselle Du Bois, a St Theresa Girls’ RC School student, was playing with her relatives in a pool made from a water tank, when they all decided to get out to go in the house to change into dry clothes and have a meal. As the others went inside, Du Bois reportedly managed to slip away from everyone’s sight. A short while after relatives noticed she was missing and started a search for her. Her body was found floating face down in the makeshift pool, which was a water tank cut in half.
By the time relatives found her and pulled her out the girl was already dead, the Guardian reported.
A neighbor who wished not to be identified was reported as telling the Guardian her immediate family was very traumatised and saddened by her death.
Tenille was described as a “little girl who carried joy from deep within her.”
“I didn’t know the people personally but from what I was told the little girl was like an angel…very playful and very bright in school. Her friends in school I am sure will miss her. The news spread like wildfire in the village here and we all are very saddened by the news,” the neighbor was reported by the Guardian as saying.
A parent whose child attends the same school as Du Bois was reported as saying the girl would have been entering Standard Two last Monday, when school reopened.
“We certainly are keeping the family in prayer at this time…as far as my daughter describes her, she was very cheerful and full of life and it appears she was popular among her peers, as my daughter is in a higher class,” the Guardian quoted the parent as saying.
